History of Eger Castle
Time Travel in the past 1000 years of Eger Castle
The History of Eger Castle exhibition –which has been rearranged for the fifth time since 1965– is now re-thought in the light of the latest archaeological, archival, cultural and military history research. We aim to present the main stages of the 1000-year history of the castle with the help of visual and audio-visual technology creating a rich spectacular world.
The important ecclesiastical, cultural, military and lifestyle events of Eger Castle are in the focus of the exhibition covering the period from the foundation of the diocese of Eger, and the flourishing Renaissance era of the bishop’s centre, then its transformation into a military border fortress and through the time of Ottoman occupation and the Rákóczi War of Independence, to the present day, the recent award of the honourable title of National memorial site. Visitors can learn about its socio-spiritual milieu through its most prominent personalities: bishops, captains.
You can get a glimpse of the restorer's workshop and light is shed on the beauty of the details of the works of art. Painted by authentic sources, the scenery that the defenders of Eger Castle might face during the siege of 1552 can also be admired.
